Webster-Chicago 760 (1949)

I found this at the flea market a couple of years ago. Cost me all of $4. It came with a lot of dirt.

It was made in 1950 by Webster-Chicago as an answer to the then-current battle of the speeds, and plays 33rpm and 45 rpm singles, as long as they are no wider than 7".

A most interesting record player in that it only plays 7" records. Manufactured and marketed in the late forties during 'The Battle Of the Speeds' between RCA and Columbia, Webster-Chicago put their money on the 7" singles format, giving the punter the option of 33 or 45rpm. Just as long as the format was 7 inches. The cabinet is very complete, though the grill cloth is missing some of the 'Seven Sixty' lettering.

It was a difficult restoration - the idler wheel was an odd size, and the changer mechanism was a challenge due to the way that the release for a stack of records worked. A rubber tube on the spindle - which swells out when compressed as in the bottom picture - and evens out when the cycle is completed, relaxing the rubber and allowing the next record to drop, was missing. I managed to source soft rubber tubing of the appropriate diameter at the local hardware store.
