NEWCOMB TR-16 AM (1950?)

Bob Bell

I was given two of these wonderful players by Dave of Dave's Record Shop, San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, CA - the hippest record store in the area. 10-watt tube-driven amplifiers, these things sound fantastic, and having two of them means I can DJ 78s at parties.

They play at all three speeds and can also play 16" transcription discs . The 12" speakers have long cables - about 40' each - and were designed to play in school auditoriums. They are LOUD !!!

There is an adjustment on the tone arm that sets the tracking for 78s (Standard) and 45s/LPs (MicroGroove). The cartridge is a GE-VR II with a push button on top for changing the stylus from Standard to MicroGroove. The motor needs time to warm up and reach the correct speed, so there is a control to increase/decrease the turntable speed, and a strobe control that lights up to give greater accuracy, although I prefer to use a paper strobe disc on the turntable as it is easier to read.

As far as I am concerned, these are the very best players out there for 78 collectors.
